The thermal dryer is a low-velocity process where the material is passed through circular tubes, normally with steam. The product stream is then mixed with hot air and taken to a blower. It undergoes a violent interaction with the hot air as it moves through a 20–30-meter-long circular drying chamber to allow the hot air to soak up the moisture.
PET flakes are then sucked by a blower and mixed with hot air in a long stainless-steel pipeline. In this tunnel, the PET flakes fall and intermix so that the material is dehumidified in the process. The final process is a cyclone separator, which also blows cool air to take the last of the moisture, dust, and fines off the flakes.
A thermal dryer is an important piece of equipment in most PET recycling plants, and it is used to heat the PET flakes to the required moisture content before they are processed through extrusion or other processes. It is most effective in high-volume applications, ensuring that recycled PET goods are dried and processed as quickly as possible.
